It was both a record for the MCA and a record for museums in the Midwest, said Gary Metzner, senior vice president of Sotheby’s, which sponsored the auction. The highest-winning bid of the night was $1.15 million for a 2018 painting “Untitled,” by American artist Richard Prince.

The auction is co-chaired by Cari B. Sacks, MCA board member and wife of Grosvenor CEO Michael Sacks, and Citadel's Kenneth C. Griffin, Illinois' wealthiest denizen. It features both silent and live auction artworks displayed in the museum's galleries, nearly 100 artworks curated by MCA Chief Curator Michael Darling.

Some 400 people attended the event, paying $500 a ticket. Proceeds from the auction support the MCA’s exhibitions and programming.

“The extraordinary generosity that takes place at each of our storied auctions is an essential part of realizing the MCA’s ardent commitment to creating exhibitions and programs that champion revelatory art and spark civic transformation," said MCA Director Madeleine Grynsztejn in a statement.
