The drive-thru model, in which patients undergo testing from their cars, aims to protect other patients and health care workers from getting the virus as cases mount.

Before visiting the drive-thru, patients must contact a primary care physician who will coordinate with public health officials to ensure testing is authorized, a hospital spokeswoman said. Those patients who receive an authorization number can schedule a test at Good Shepherd.

“Preparing for pandemics is not new and our expert infection preventionists, physicians and nurses are trained and ready for this,” Advocate Aurora said in a separate emailed statement. “We have held simulation exercises for treating COVID-19 patients, have plans in place to address increased patient volume and have implemented visitor restrictions.”

Meanwhile, hospital chains across the country—including Dallas-based Tenet Healthcare, the University of Washington Medical Center and Minneapolis-based M Health Fairview—have set up similar sites, reports.

Another local hospital, Rush University Medical Center, constructed a tent inside its ambulance bay to test patients in isolation, the reports.
